Learning Comes Alive in Mrs. DeVille’s Third Grade Classroom
Before the recent snow and cold swept in, Mrs. DeVille’s third grade class took learning to a whole new level with a celebration of Idiom Day. Students arrived dressed as silly and creative idiom phrases, bringing figurative language to life in a fun and memorable way. An idiom is a phrase that does not mean exactly what the words say but instead has a special meaning—common examples include “raining cats and dogs,” “piece of cake,” or *“hold your horses.” The students’ creativity was on full display.
The excitement continued in class with a truly out-of-this-world experience: the Glow Room. The classroom was transformed into a space-themed learning environment complete with special lighting, neon features, and multiple “space stations” for students to explore. Equipped with glow sticks to light their way, students rotated through each station, engaging with hands-on activities designed to spark curiosity and deepen understanding.
All of this immersive learning will culminate in a meaningful academic task. Using the information they gathered, students will write an opinion essay answering an important question: Who should explore space—humans or robots? This project allows students to apply their research, critical thinking, and writing skills in an engaging and purposeful way.
Learning truly shines in environments like this. Kudos to Mrs. DeVille for creating such an innovative, fun, and engaging classroom experience that inspires students to learn and think deeply every day.
