Hello United Middle School Parents and Guardians:

We are reaching out to share information about our upcoming character education and career exploration programming. Our priority is to use our time to educate students with the necessary academic and life skills needed to meet their individual goals. United Local Middle School will utilize various curriculum resources as well as partner with outside agencies. Please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns. Permission slips will be coming home for the off-site field trips.

United’s own Mrs. Hull and Mrs. ManyPenny will be presenting the Sandy Hook Promise Start With Hello initiative to combat loneliness and isolation in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. The program aims to build empathy and empower students to be socially inclusive, by reaching out and starting with “Hello”.

Mr. Baker and Mrs. Raymond will be speaking with students about See Something Say, Something in grades 6,7, and 8 beginning next week. This program is based on the Sandy Hook Promise curriculum. This is a great platform to empower our students to keep our community safe when they fear that someone is at risk of hurting himself/herself or others. This is a three-step strategy that helps students identify warning signs/threats, to take it seriously/act immediately, and to tell a trusted adult.

Mr. Tom Coffee, Leader’s Edge Mentor and United Local graduate, will be presenting Activation Level 1 to the 6th graders. This 10 week program focuses on seven character principles including ambition, responsibility, hard work, emotions, restraint, common sense, and generosity. Mr. Coffee will also be building on last year’s presentations with Activation Level 2 for the 7th. Volume 2 is a six week-long program with a focus on attitude, self-esteem, willpower, understanding people, forgiveness and hope. The 8th grade will participate in Activation Level 3. The level 3 lessons are goals, savings, connections, empathy and personal growth.

Mrs. Davidson and the grade level teams have several career exploration opportunities coming up. The students will be completing career interest surveys as well as taking part in virtual job shadowing. Mrs. Davidson will be meeting with individual students to explore possible career interests once the survey is completed.

In addition to exploration and education in the building, our students will be attending a few great off-site experiences. On Thursday October 5th our 8th grade students will be touring the Columbiana County Career and Technical Center. During this trip, students will receive an overview of each two-year program, see a demonstration, and learn about career opportunities in each field. In addition, the 6th, 7th (Wednesday, September 20th) and 8th graders (Thursday, September 21st) will participate in the Mahoning Valley Skilled Trades Expo at the Canfield Fairgrounds. This interactive expo will help guide students in a pathway for the Skilled Construction Trades and will feature opportunities for students to learn by doing. Permission forms for all off-site trips will be sent home.

Respectfully,

Frank Baker- Principal
