Day #2 of National FFA Convention was our tour day! We visited Fair Oaks farms, a multi-conglomerate incorporated farming business in north western Indiana. The company milks more than 25,000 cows, runs a farrow to wean operation totaling more than 9,000 swine, farms 19,000 acres and had an enormous agritourism division. Students got to see first hand how Fair Oaks puts animal welfare, bio security and learned what it takes to run a dairy & swine operation of this caliber. We first toured the dairy facility where they have both rotary style parlors and an entirely robotic automated 2,000 head dairy facility. Next we attended the swine unit that is farrow (birth) to weaning (no longer nursing) pig farm. students got to track pigs from birth all the way to breeding. They got to see piglets being born, practice ultrasounding, and see the vaccination protocols. We rounded out the evening with a fun trip to “Get air trampoline park” where the students tried to cripple Mr. Gentry. Everyone is exhausted but had a great second day at convention 🐮 🐷

United Local Agricultural Education department would like to extend a huge thank you to Josh Aegerter & Aegerter Family Farms for harvesting this years bean crop. The school farm is a joint partnership with United Local FFA and community partners to plant, fertilize, work ground and harvest our 22 acres of crop ground. This serves as an educational recourse and fundraising venture for the FFA's student activity account. This years crop produced 45 bushel/acre. Thank you again to all the community members who made this years crop possible. Irwin family farms, Heritage Co-Op, Austen Shoemaker, Carlton Cope, Tractor Depot, and the Aegerter family!

8th grade students in intro to agriculture spent their last day in the class practicing welding. This week, students learned about types of metal, types of welding, how welding works and then got to put the knowledge to use in the shop! Students in Livestock selection & management are learning about Livestock Identification methods. To put the methods to practice, they made head bands and utilized paper ears to create Pig ear notches and cattle ear tags based on their birthdates. students then went around the class and read their classmates tags and notches and recorded their information based on notch reading and tag information. Look how stylish!
